British Sea Power – Live Gig Review

britishseapower

British Sea Power

I’d never knowing heard of a song from British Sea Power until my awesome partner took me along to see them live Wednesday at Shepard’s Bush. I must admit, I’m a picky so-and-so when it comes to music. Two artists could sing the same song near on identical and I’d probably adore one far more than the other. Rock is one of those genres that I love but I can also switch off if it just doesn’t grab me. I’ll be honest – when British Sea Power came out for their acoustic opening set I struggled. The vocals were a bit wobbly and the songs slightly in no mans land. Then Toy came on and refused to budge from playing the same singular chord in a supposed musical orgasm for literally twenty-five minutes. I was bored with that and I thought I was in for the long haul….

Then British Sea Power came out for their main set… and it was fantastic.

If I’m honest, I have no idea what many of the song titles were but my general observations were that they are a rock band whom enjoy themselves immensely on stage and it fed through to everyone in the audience. Most tracks had a certain twist on something. Be it a trumpet playing along with the guitar, the violin padding out the synths or the two lead vocalists belting it out. The secondary vocalist that seemed very exposed in the acoustic set fitted in perfectly when it all went plugged. Some people just have a voice that even if it’s not the strongest, lends itself well to a certain sound and here he shone. There weren’t massive numbers all the way through but each song held an atmosphere that I really tapped into. A big shout out to the visuals behind the band too. Zippy sock puppets, evil dolls and on stage polar bear costumes having a fight with the band – you were always entertained.

I’ll leave you with a few clips from the evening from other people’s footage. I’m looking forward to discovering more about the band in the future…

Huski – Two Free Tracks From New Album!

We love all things Huski and now the electro-duo are back with new songs to showcase their second album entitled “Strangelove” due early 2011.

A new song entitled “Girl.Kill.Smile” is available to download once you sign up to Huski’s official mailing list and you can also download an Arcade Fire cover “The Suburbs” too, which is accompanied by a high velocity funkidecent video. Its fantastic news to know Huski wasn’t a one off album. There are UK gigs lined up for November too to run alongside the first single “Wartime Widow”. It’s a good day for ears today.

Concert Review: Gregory Douglass

A while back we gave a shout out to Gregory Douglass and his web concerts where he invited everyone along for an fun concert in aid of fundraising for his new album. HPM popped along yesterday to see how it all worked and was a happy bunny by the end of it.

Greg was joining by Celloist Mo and they took requests, chatted away to the virtual audience and generally had a great time. The quality of the stream was great and it really was like having you’re own concert in your own house and the feeling of it was that you were being given something quite individual and special to you. Greg can certainly wow the crowds too with electrifying performances of songs past and present and although it was a relaxed mood, once the first notes were played for each song its hard not to be captivated by his stage presence.

We recommend you all pop along and see what the fuss we’re creating about it and HPM is certain you’ll enjoy it!

Live Vault – Carina Round

While Carina posts some helerious snippet videos of the making of her new album on her facebook profile, I’d like everyone to see Carina seriously rock out with “Ready to Confess” from her launch gig from her last full length album “Slow Motion Addict” which has been one of my favourite discoveries of 2010 to date.

Gregory Douglass’ Monday Night House Shows

In an idea so ingenious I might steal it myself, Gregory Douglass has started off a Monday night Virtual House Show series. Running from his studio, it looks like its going to be a great series and special guest performers will be popping in to help out, all in aid of keeping Greg’s musical dream alive. As a website that supports wholeheartedly independant artists (and because HPM loves his music) we’re just doing our bit to push some traffic his way. Pop over to his website for more details!

Michael Giacchino To Perform Lost Finale Concert

We all know him somehow, but Michael Giacchino is busy preparing for a one off concert of Lost music ahead of the final ever episode of the show. Entitled “Lost Live: The Final Celebration” they’ll apparently be a preview screening of the second last episode straight after the concert. The concert itself will be on 13th May at the Royce Hall, LA and will also have some of the series stars there too. There’s a great behind the scenes piece of the first Lost concert Michael did on the season 4 boxset of Lost.

Live Vault – Imogen Heap

Back in 1998 when Imogen Heap was just stepping into the world of music with iMegaphone, I had found my new favourite artist and saved up to buy one of my first ever CD’s. “iMegaphone” has such a special place, I was delighted when Immi played not so long ago a re-release concert for the album. This is “Sweet Religion” my favourite from the album. Enjoy!

Rock Band: Beatles – E3 Press Conference Video

Harmonix have long been doing great things with music games (Frequency & Amplitude) and now their Rock Band series is getting the Beatles look. Take a look at their E3 presentation in a special video made for Higher Plain Music by the fantastic Jeriaska. Jeriaska is runner of Nobuooo.com , Jeriaska.com and also a great vimeo channel packed with various goodies and interviews.

Without further ado then… Rock Band: Beatles! Following the same concept as all Rock Band’s before them, taking your individual instruments and then pressing the right note or hitting the right drum at the right time. However everyone knows many Beatles songs so now instead of being a pure rockers dream, its now in prime position to eclipse SingStar as the drunken Saturday night party game. I can hear the renditions of “Hey Jude” already…

This video follows their E3 presentation of the new game! Enjoy!

Vienna Teng – Inland Territory – Album Preview!

Despite being two months from its release, you can preview a stream of Vienna Teng’s latest album “Inland Territory”. You can hear the entire album here. Also available are her American tour dates.

The album is much more up-tempo and much more experimental than her previous album “Dreaming Through the Noise”. There’s not a duff song and this leaves us pumped for the release on the 7th April.

HPM won’t review the album until we’ve bought it but just by this stream we can honestly say – it’s going to be absolutely fantastic!

Nobuo Uematsu – Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite Review

Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite is a fully orchestrated album, showcasing songs from Final Fantasy I-III. Epic is the name of the game here, as everything gets for the first time, an arranged album! For an arranged album from 1989, it hasnt dated a day and stands up strong today. The tracks were arranged by Katsuhisa Hattori and Takayuki Hattori and the album was performed by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

Scene I (FFII’s main theme) features a choir and a string arrangement powerfully pounding out the main tune, with a little help from some brass and percussion arrangements. It is a beautiful rendition and an excellent opener as it’s very familiar.

Scene II (FFII’s Battle Scene 2) has a very strange drumbeat to accompany the song, which aside from that is a very accomplished piece, with as much drama as you can handle. The drumbeat doesn’t really detract from the song; it just seems a little out of place although over time I have gotten used to its quirk.

Scene III is a medley of FFI’s Opening, the town theme and Matoya’s cave! Each segment is excellently transposed. The Opening part’s majestic ways must have been what earned it such high occult to be included somewhere in every Final Fantasy! The town theme is much more quieter, effortlessly rolling into Matoya’s Cave which is where the choir join the string and brass instruments for what is a very relaxing piece before building up for a crescendo of the opening theme again. Fantastic stuff!

Scene IV (FFII’s Finale) starts off with a picturesque harp and xylophone piece that grabs your heart. Then a heart wrenching string piece is played, almost like a royal anthem. From here it gradually adds layers of instrumentation to a big finale! This is classic Final Fantasy music.

Scene V (FFI and II’s Preludes) showcases various instruments for a military induced fun tune, that instead of being majestic is more happy and outgoing. Soon this stops and the traditional Prelude begins, complete with a harp. It is very cutely done. Wind instruments add a vocalised tune over the top and it forms a delicate song, which shines amongst so many big battle tracks.

Scene VI (FF1′s Kuluku’s Volcano) is a playful song, with pizzicato strings making the tune at the beginning sound like a clumsy, happy one. Soon other instruments enter the fray and it turns a little more mystical and dangerous and the pace quickens and it turns into a dramatic piece.

The final piece, Scene VII (FF1′s Main Theme) rounds off the album in typical style, with a majestically big piece, almost like a swan song. Everyone gets in on the act, and a full orchestra and choir pound out the ending to an ovation at the ending!

After listening to a blinding CD and clapping along with the crowd at the end, you’ll find this CD treasured as one of your favourites, especially if you’re a fan of the older games melodies. Technically accomplished and on scale that was rarely done at the time of making, buy this piece of history and you wont be disappointed.
