I love it when I stumble across something accidentally on Soundcloud when looking at a different PR submission. Mixing together a bit of Sylvan Esso, Alex Stoltze, Julia Holter and Hannah Peel – Hannah Epperson makes experimental orchestral pop. One moment she will be gently slinking over string arrangements before launching into explosive synth-heavy electronica moments. Her voice is able to flick from dreamy to intense at a whim and the lead single from her 2018 album ’20/20 (Amelia)’ blew me away on first listen. I had to hit replay immediately. Its the juxtaposition of the calmness of the verses on one hand and then extreme ferocity of the choruses on the other. It just wowed me.
Hannah Epperson’s latest release is ‘Slowdown’ , the aforementioned album from 2018. It fuses together all those synth and orchestral elements that remind me so much of Hannah Peel’s dreamtronica album ‘Awake But Always Dreaming’. I’ll be grabbing it on pay day but will be unlikely to review it until early next year as I’m focusing on reviewing 2020 related material for the remainder of the year. Enjoy the superb single below.
