J’Kerian Morgan is the artist known as Lotic. Lotic makes artistic alt-pop in a way that reminds me a little of Bjork in terms of freedom and ideas but not necessarily song structure or sound. Instead, Lotic is more electronica based with an 808 rhythmic bass synth taking a central role. Add to that various orchestral and ancestral instrumentation and ideas and you get a real melting pot of music.
Today Lotic announced her second album ‘Water’ is on its way, pouring onto our speakers in October. The first single ‘Come Unto Me’ is a hypnotic and scattered state of chords, trills, percussive rattlings and emotive vocals. The album itself is a set of songs that Lotic says are about ‘having to be adaptable, while being dragged through the trenches’. It focuses on life, love, loss, bloodlines and resilience. ‘Come Unto Me’ really connected with me in a way few new artists I’ve discovered in 2021 has and I am now about to dive into Lotic’s 2018 debut as a result.
