When I heard ‘Sediments We Move: Part V’ from Charlotte Greve, I was so intrigued I hit replay immediately. The track is a mixture of vocal snippets, choral samples and expressive freestyling electric guitar rock that plays out like they’re playing jazz. It sounded so unusual yet so intriguing. The jazz feels underneath the choral rock exterior makes more sense when you realise Charlotte Greve is also a composer and saxophonist. Coming from that background and applying more classical and jazz traditions into a crazy rock concept album makes for something that just pops in your ears.
Below is a two-minute sample of the complete seven-minute track. It will be a difficult album to pick samples out of because of how nebulous Charlotte Greve (aka Wood River sometimes) is with her sound. She’ll move from jazz to 80’s pop to choral to metal to ambient. It’s a huge feat that any of it hangs together at all let alone sound so good. The track is part of a seven track album like symphonic movements. Bringing in German choral collective Cantus Domus seals the deal.
