chamber folk contemporary classical Introducing... modern classical ondes marenot piano viola

Introducing… Snowdrops

Viola, piano, pump organ and ondes provide a new take on classical music you're going to adore.

During the 14 years of running Higher Plain Music, I’m always learning and discovering new instruments. Christine Ott is a musician I owe a special thanks to as her music introduced me to unique Ondes Martenot. It’s an instrument that’s like a harmonium and theremin had a baby. I liken it to an alien violin. Snowdrops sees Christine Ott take the Ondes Marenot and join Mathieu Gabry on piano and Anne-Irène Kempf on viola to create a powerful trio. Their combined musical prowess is astonishing as if the piano isn’t rumbling or cascading, the ondes or viola are waxing and waning in empathy. Often, the trio are barrelling off each other’s cues and their music ebbs and flows like emotional waves.

“Missing Island” is the trio’s follow-up album to their 2020 album “Volutes”. The idea is to create music that sits somewhere between contemporary classical, post-folk and electro-acoustic. The new album, which focuses on calling forth the four elements, also brings a hand-pump organ in for good measure too. For me, Snowdrops is perfect for any listener who thinks they’ve heard everything already and are awaiting new sounds you simply don’t hear anywhere else. The lead single “Firebirds” is a stunning entry point for their style and sound. It’s available to listen to below. The album “Missing Island” is due for release on the 25th of November.
