Ambient artist Eluvium turns to a full orchestra for his new album

Trading in synths for orchestras.

Prolific composer Eluvium has tried his hand at fully orchestrating ambience with his forthcoming new album. The new album titled ‘(Whirring Marvels In) Consensus Reality’ sees the traditionally ambient-based composer use a full orchestra for the first time. However, the electronic aspect of Eluvium’s music couldn’t disappear from the musical project due to one specific problem. When writing the album, Eluvium (Matthew Robert Cooper) developed shoulder and arm pain, leaving his left arm less than its usual dexterous self. Quite literally, this meant he had to write and perform with one arm tied behind his back. This led Eluvium to merge electronic automation for parts of the music alongside what he could play and thus the idea of writing purposefully in that way was born.

To celebrate the run-up to the release of ‘(Whirring Marvels In) Consensus Reality’, two new tracks will be released each month. Skipping December, this will unveil the album as a rich painting of orchestral brushstrokes, hidden automation and electronica and a few curious synth sounds hidden behind the swell of strings and horns. The first two tracks of the album ‘Escapement’ and ‘Swift Automation’ are out now and are available to listen to below. It gives a great insight into how much of a sound palette the album will have.
