San Diego alternative group Creature Canyon have released their new single “Mirrors”. It’s a mixture of soulful pop and alternative indie moments. What took me by surprise was how that soul influence came through with its expertly crafted synth outro. The final minute and a half are overflowing with a jamming synth solo that escalates into a big finale. Whilst the synths go nuts, the drums, vocals, guitars and bass just chill and slink around. The song itself is about troubled relationships and a lack of self-reflection when things get rough and improvement is required.
Creature Canyon is usually a little more psychedelic with their music, and there’s definitely a psych touch here. “Mirrors” is a song that’s grounded in soul though. On speaking about the track, they felt the lyric “I’m my own worst enemy” was how they all felt at times. They decided that “Mirrors” would be a track where they could do something new and experiment with their instruments without any judgement. I like that idea of a band having a freestyle track!
