Awkward Branches is a new musical project from former Friction frontman Mike Barratt and long-term collaborator Phil Swan. Deciding to stride out on their own, they named themselves Awkward Branches based on how they met. They both worked at an old wedding chapel and struck up conversation while waiting for wedding ceremonies to conclude under a tree outside. Through that they discovered their love of music and from there the music flowed.
‘A Frame (Not a Window)’ is their debut single and is taken from a forthcoming EP due out next spring. It’s a quaint and bouncy acoustic guitar-based number with bright and airy synths and soft airy vocals. It reminds me a little of how C Duncan takes me to a dreamy acoustic rock place. Awkward Branches give me the same feeling. It’s accompanied but a warm animated video that was inspired by paper craft of abstract shapes. If you need a little calm in your musical world, give Awkward Branches a spin.
