Pianist and composer Celia Hollander has focused in on the element of wind for her upcoming album ‘Second Draft’. From Celia’s perspective, the wind is like an invisible force that she likens to the force of creativity and making music. Like humanity and emotions, you can feel its force but never see it and it’s that element of wind and motion that Celia is zoning in on. Lead single ‘In Plain Sight’ tackles this idea evocatively as the piano shimmers, glistens and pulls itself up and down octaves like Celia’s fingers are being blown around like feathers. At times the track doesn’t even sound human, like generative software may have taken over. It is like the song blustering by and we are watching and listening on.
Celia Hollander wrote ‘Second Draft’ last year when she was a composer in residence at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City. Every day for an hour, she’d improvise on their upright piano and collect the recordings of whatever thoughts and feelings came to her. She used it as a time to down tools from other projects but this became a new one for Celia to stitch together afterwards. Once the residency was over, she selected moments from her recordings and digitally sewed them together, adding filters and effects to change the tone into what we hear today.
