Iglooghost – Collision Data / Diode Teeth Review

Iglooghost has celebrated his new signing to LUCKYME® by releasing a double A-side single which includes a collaboration with a personal favourite artist of mine Marina Herlop. With both artists operating in the fringes of experimental electronica, albeit in very different guises, this announces a nice new era for Iglooghost. After the symphonic complexities of his previous album ‘Lei Line Eon’, it appears Igloghost is moving back to his glitchy, warped and twisted brand of aggressive beats and epileptic alien landscapes.

‘Collision Data’ is fast, aggressive and punchy. The beats come at you like a bullet train and every other sound is chopped up into buzzing ripples. Seamus Malliagh (Iglooghost) whispers and gasps around the edges of the track whilst Marina Herlop’s voice offers an unsettling calm. From angular chants to hollow siren bells, Marina wraps herself around an ever-changing song that crams about 12 genres into four minutes and sounds like none of them. Apparently, the song was made on an illegal computer that runs on engine oil. The second track ‘Diode Teeth’ verges on nu-metal with how fuzzy and grizzly the drums and the main keyboard synths are. Everything sounds like it has been burnt to a crisp. That allows the Tom Vek style of vocals to sizzle underneath the low-slung basslines and rhythms. Iglooghost says the song is about hiding in a hydrothermal vent and it carries that sense of guttural and primal rage and danger throughout.

This return to chaotic electronica is a welcome one. No one makes experimental electronica in the same visceral manner as Malliagh does and Herlop’s vocal additions are a great addition too. With this excellent taster to whet the appetite, I’m very excited to hear where this new chapter of Iglooghost will take us. I know it’ll bring lore, graphics, crazy visuals, art installs and maybe even a clothing range and more language to learn too.
