Kelly Moran’s upcoming album is all about the Disklavier

Experimental composer and pianist Kelly Moran returns with her new album ‘Moves in the Field’ and it features a single instrument – the Disklavier. Kelly was loaned one by Yamaha back in 2020 and the instrument allows you to record performances for the piano to play by itself. Initially, this was to help Kelly work on a duet with another pianist by when the pandemic hit, Moran found that she began writing with the Disklavier as her duet partner.

This pushed Kelly Moran to explore the instrument and find ways to compose that allowed her to layer inhumanly possibly compositions on top of her own performances. The result was Kelly could compose for more fingers or a greater endurance or hand span than she could possibly have. The result is the album ‘Moves in the Field’.

Lead single ‘Butterfly Phase’ is a beautiful merger of classical composition and dewy background piano trickles that remind me of modulated synth runs that I personally play with using digital audio workstations. It is utterly gorgeous and has elegance and grace. It is still pushing the physical boundaries of multi-layered piano but in a subtle way.

Enjoy the beautiful ‘Butterfly Phase’ below. You can pre-order the album on Bandcamp and follow Kelly Moran there for more information.
