Kingdom Hearts is a much-loved and lore-spiralling RPG series that Yoko Shimomura has predominantly scored. Her bombastic, gothic and majestic battle tracks go side by side with her airy and often sombre character tracks. The soundtracks are superb and a shining example of RPG music in its looping element. However, also in the mid-2000s The Weather Channel seemed to take inspiration, or at the very least a stylistic nod towards Shimomura’s distinctive style. Their storm warning music pieces are like news anchor or news bulletin themes deciding they want to play symphonic piano electronica anthems instead. They go hard. Now, who influenced whom, or whether this is just a happy coincidence – I’ve no idea. It does make for an excellent guessing game though.
Enter YouTuber Aid1043 who has put together a fantastic quiz of 21 song clips for you to guess: Is it Kingdom Hearts or is it The Weather Channel? This is the video game music quiz I never knew I needed and it’s great fun to play. Enjoy it below and give Aid1043 some love with a like and a comment with your score. They specialise in Kingdom Hearts content.
