Mike Lindsay is one of the founding members of English folk band Tunng and whilst the band is between albums, Mike Lindsay has delved into a solo career. His debut album ‘supershapes volume 1’ is due out on the 14th of June. With two singles out already, the initial impressions mark it up as a woodwind and brass twist on Tunng’s folk. Think folksy guitars, heartfelt vocals and lyrics, weird electronic fits and starts and some unusual dreamy psychedelic qualities and you are there. Mike says the album is about finding “the miraculous in the mundane and the majestic in the domestic”. It’s something Mike is often drawn to over his music career with lyrics about all kinds of minute life moments being a foundational part of his craft.
The album will feature Anna B Savage on vocals, Ross Blake on woodwinds and soft sax, Robert Stillman on tenor sax and Adam Betts on drums. I find it fascinating when a musician we know as part of one band breaks out and forms their own sound. Sometimes the apple isn’t far from the tree and sometimes it is a total 180. I’m intrigued to see where the full album places Mike. The latest preview single is ‘lie down’. The single version is missing the final minute of dreamy spoken word snippets but amps up the funky sax folk that stumbles its way through the mix. It’s an unusual track that reminds me a little of Tune-Yards if they were born in the English countryside.
Enjoy the single ‘lie down’ below, it’s out now. For more information on Mike Lindsay, follow him on Bandcamp. Tunng the band is still alive and well
