Corset Lore is best described as chiptune-adjacent. Using a mixture of analogue synths, lo-fi Gameboy textures and processed vocals, the overall sound is more eclectic and electronic, yet grounded in that chiptune world. As the synths and the drums have an 80s overblown production to them, I’m reminded of early Cocteau Twins albums – especially ‘Blue Bell Knoll’.
Fans of dystopian overlord synth music will feel right at home. Lead single ‘Coryphée’ also opens up Corset Lore’s debut album ’81 Terpsichore’. It’s a concept album about a futuristic community that is built around the race to the top of a conformist food chain. The hedonistic synths sparkle and glitter over machine-gun beats. At first, it feels like we’re at a futuristic, if a bit brutalistic, party. However, there is an unnerving undercurrent that despite all the energy, all is not well. Corset Lore, the artist name for musician Tamara Yadao, brings her vocals in for the final third of the track cementing the unsettled edge. The vocals balance an elegant call out with layered processing that makes them sound pained. It all sets up for a fascinating concept album I’m looking forward to diving into.
In an exclusive premiere, you can listen to the single ‘Coryphée’ below. The single comes out tomorrow with the album ’81 Terpsichore’ releasing on 23rd August. You can pre-order the album on Bandcamp.
