Introducing… Paradise Cinema

Fans of contemporary jazz will likely know the man before Paradise Cinema. Jack Wyllie was already part of Portico Quartet and Szun Waves before he set up Paradise Cinema for its debut record in 2020. Jack describes Paradise Cinema as a Fourth World inspired project. Often this means music that merges together ancient musical ideas, cultures or instruments with a futuristic sound. After basing the debut album around Mbalax music (music from Gambia and Senegal, with Jack living in the latter), the forthcoming album ‘returning, dream’ takes a different approach.

Jack Wyllie says this album is inspired by the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics.

“It is an imagining of what music could be like in a different time and space, ancient and futuristic from everywhere and nowhere at once. I was listening to a lot of physics podcasts when I created this record. I loved the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics; about multiple worlds splitting off like branches on a tree when faced with quantum choices. I could imagine different histories and worlds and multiple versions of myself, others and even other societies existing. In this album I’ve dug into these ideas and attempted to make music that would come from those different spaces, trying to poke my finger through to the other selves and stories.”

You can hear these ideas in the title track, which is the new single. On ‘returning, dream’ you can hear Jack’s saxophone alongside various sabar and tama drums provided by Khadim Mbaye and Tons Sambe. Add in lots of drifting electronica and sounds that ripple like far-reaching memories you can’t quite grasp and you have a hypnotic single.

Enjoy ‘returning, dream’ below – the single is out now. You can pre-order the album and follow Paradise Cinema on Bandcamp for more information about the release. The album comes out on 13th September.
