Klirre – Plastik Azur Review

What does Klirre sound like?

8bit Gameboy chiptunes for the clubs.

The review of ‘Plastik Azur’ by Klirre

It’s been three years since Klirre’s last release and the artist that brings us some of the widest and largest chiptune bangers has returned with a brief, three track release to whet our appetites once again. It is an all too brief return to the club floors with a trio of non-stop anthems but it just reminds us how well put together Klirre’s work is.

Klirre – Plastik Azur cover

‘Nao El’ opens the release. It is a chirpy mid-tempo track that starts off chirpy and over time lets its descending bleep melody give a mature if slightly sombre tone take over. It does a lot in just two minutes and I’d have liked it extended to let each element breathe a little more. ‘Azur’ really hits that 8-bit vibe with arps that jiggle and remind me of ZX Spectrum and C64 chipsets but polished. The beats and cymbal ride white noise bursts hit just right as the big chords, huge arps and intricate melodies sparkle in the club lights. This song goes harder than ‘Nao El’ but closer ‘Burenia’ ups the beats and bass further. This four-chord stomper is like a boss theme or a challenge level from a 2D precision platformer with the bass turned to 11. The throbbing bass lets all the higher-octave arpeggiators jangle and intermingle without hurting the ears. The kick drum is especially punchy too, ensuring each element of the song is heard evenly in the mix.

In and out in under nine minutes, this release a short burst of frenetic energy. I hope ‘Plastik Azur’ is a prelude to more Klirre anthems coming soon. They have a knack for making something you can connect with rhythmically and melodically and let the chiptunes take over your body. I can’t keep still when Klirre is on the air and this trio continues that trend. 8-bit anthems that keep on giving.
