Björk has spent the last few years touring her audio-visual extravaganza Cornucopia, supporting her most recent albums ‘Utopia’ and ‘Fossora’. Both feature a large amount of woodwind instruments, live percussion, digital samples and an alien angelic aesthetic. As someone who relishes and integrates technology, Cornucopia features a dazzling selection of visuals by Tobias Gremmier and set design by Chiara Stephenson. Alongside building a reverb chamber for a surround sound music effect for the shows, one of the biggest spectacles is a giant projection curtain that allows many of the visuals to appear more 3D or VR-like. This is because of how the last decade of Björk’s work is scattered across all kinds of media. The whole experience was a feast for the senses and so I’d wondered if this would translate well to a recorded concert.
Our first taste of this recorded concert release comes in a digest version of the concert for Apple Music. The full version will receive a theatrical release. For anyone diving deeper into how this media and music project was built, I’ve attached ‘Losss’ from the concert, a breakdown that Tobias made for his visuals on track ‘Body Memory’, and a superb 50-minute interview for Apple Music in a rare on-camera interview.
Let us hope that a Blu-ray release is in the works, but I expect the digest version will have a time-limited exclusivity before that happens.
