Introducing… Kat Robichaud

What if Kate Bush’s ‘Hounds of Love’ era sound turned itself a little more gothic? Well, that’s my “I’m not proud of it but it makes sense” description of Kat Robichaud and her latest single ‘Vampire Love’. With massive drum machines, strident piano chords, earworm synths and a strong vocal performance, ‘Vampire Love’ is a great introduction to a track that feels like it should be getting major attention. It perfectly straddles neo-wave, piano pop and alternative pop music whilst keeping its melodic sensibilities at the fore. It is slightly more poppy than most of Kat’s previous music, which has mostly had a glam-rock touch. Think more guitar and a very light dusting of Amanda Palmer cabaret and you’ll be in the ballpark.

Kat Robichaud is not a newcomer to music or performance though. She’s been performing for 20 years in various guises including hosting her cabaret show Misfit Cabaret which embraces burlesque, drag, circus, and magic as part of its performances. A true artist in many forms, you never quite know what will come next from Kat’s wardrobe but it will usually be something with an underground vibe. With this vampire horror phase now underway, I’m keen to hear what a full album of this style of music would sound like.

Enjoy the fun music video for ‘Vampire Love’ – the single is out now. For more information on Kat Robichaud and all her art projects, visit her website.
