Tune-Yards returns with ‘Limelight’ and new album out May

‘Better Dreaming’ is the title of the new forthcoming album from Tune-Yards. It is scheduled for release on 16th May and the lead single ‘Limelight’ continues to showcase the groovy rhythms of the duo. Nate’s basslines are thick, heavy and slap. Merrill’s voice is layered like a playground chant whilst her huge range is on display in the background. Whilst the overarching melody is a grower, not a shower, I clicked with the patchwork quilt production. Weird synths, detuned arps, snapshots of voice recorder notes and a general lo-fi stitching simmers away underneath the main tune. It is something Tune-Yards has always done exceptionally well and the more you listen, the more you appreciate it.

In many ways, it sounds closer to Tune-Yards’ early albums when Merrill and Nate were a duo. The album is built around Merrill’s drum looping rather than having a dedicated drummer like the last few tours. That DIY element shines through but with the wisdom and assurance of many albums behind them. The album itself will focus on themes of self-love, ego death, and dreaming of a world where we can all thrive rather than just survive.

The music video for ‘Limelight’ is out now. For more information on all things Tune-Yards, including the supporting tour for the album, visit the Tune-Yards website.
