Heddlu is the new moniker and project for Rhodri Daniel. Previously a founding member of Welsh band Estrons, it has been 6 years since the band ceased to exist. During that time, Rhodri discovered his hearing had been severely damaged – a legacy of years of live touring. Rhodri took time out to recover from his hearing loss, tinnitus, and noise sensitivity. That led to heddlu being born in 2022, with its debut album being written during Rhodi’s completion of a 900-mile journey called the Wales Coastal Path. Since then, he has spent the last few years writing and experimenting with new sounds and instruments.
Heddlu (meaning ‘police’ in Welsh from the words ‘peace’ and ‘force’) is now on its second album. Entitled ‘Tramor’ (‘Overseas’ in Welsh), it’s a mixture of bold and intimate rock that takes a lot from the psych-rock world. The new single ‘Paid Besco Am Dim’ (‘Don’t Worry About A Thing’ in Welsh) has an explosive outpouring of cascading guitar noodling, tight power chords, and electronic organs ripped out of the 1970s. It is a catchy, maximalist track that gives and gives – it’s an upbeat anthem of optimism and comfort. The track is for Rhodri’s sister, who has been battling breast cancer. We all wish her a powerful recovery, and I hope this song recharges her batteries. Fans of Air and the rockier side of Caribou will be right at home here.
