In what is clearly a busy weekend for announcing new singles and albums in the contemporary jazz world, GoGo Penguin are back with a new single and album to come. With new members comes a slight tweak in the formula. In what is traditionally a piano, double bass, and drum trio, for the new single ‘Fallowfield Loops’, bassist Nick Blanka swaps the double bass for an electric one. With Chris Illingworth’s piano muted to sound like a Koto at times, it’s the breakbeat percussion of Jon Scott that keeps us grounded. These are subtle changes that sculpt a slightly different sound, but the song itself is an immediately identifiable GoGo Penguin song.
‘Fallowfield Loops’ is the lead single from the forthcoming album ‘Necessary Fictions’. The album is due for release on the 20th June. GoGo Penguin has said the album is about “shaking off these projected lenses of the past and taking steps to become our authentic selves”. I think this is why we might be hearing different tweaks to instruments on the album. Some days you just want to wear something different. Alongside this, the album appears to have guest performances with contemporary classical group Manchester Collective, Ugandan-British folk artist Daudi Matsiko, and violinist Rakhi Singh. I’m looking forward to hearing more.
