Nearly a year and a half after their last release, alternative pop/rock band Yumi Zouma have returned with their new single ‘Bashville on the Sugar’. The band has been going for over a decade but has moved between variations of rock over the years. Originally a shoegaze rock band, they speared through dream pop and ended up in the synth pop world for their debut album ‘Yoncalla’. With their latest release, things are moving back towards rock again, with tight-knit guitars and sploshing drums leading the way and the synths playing a secondary role in the background.
Yumi Zouma says the single is an ode to public transport and specifically, the New York subway. Each member lives in a different city around the globe, so travel is a part of their lives. Between Melbourne, London, New York, and Wellington, the quartet have racked up the miles! With the band originating from New Zealand, they’ve come to appreciate and rely upon the workhorse. This bustling train en route carries through into the rhythms and guitars on the song. The song has lots of tiny cogs and nuances that barrel at you quickly, taking you on a zippy journey. ‘Bashville on the Sugar’ is the first single from an as yet untitled forthcoming project. I’m feeling that either an EP or an LP is incoming soon!
The music video features travelogue recordings from the band on their travels alongside photo studio moments and NYC shots. ‘Bashiville on the Sugar’ is out now. Clearly, the UK needs to learn some tricks from the rest of the world, given my work commute! I live on the most expensive line per mile in the UK, and it’s seldom working. Still, with singles like this coming out, I can dream of a better choo-choo future… A new future is what Yumi Zouma will be hoping for, with their new record label Nettwerk.
