Effortlessly cool and instantly gratifying is how I’d describe ‘Mildew’, the new single from trio Big Fear. The song brings indie pop drums with purpose, tight guitar work, cinematic synths, and the expressive and captivating vocals of Alice Edwards. Alice has a voice that cuts through other instruments with its soft clarity. Intimate, personal, confessional – it’s like Alice is slipping you diary entries into your headphones.
‘Mildew’ isn’t a typical name for a single. The track is about an atypical topic, too – agrophobia. About the single, Alice says:
“Mildew is very much a dialogue between oneself and anxiety, with the view to explore how anxiety is a very limiting cage to one’s actions and behaviours, but the call is coming from inside the house – mental illness convinces you that your thoughts and behaviours are rational.”
‘Mildew’ is taken from the forthcoming EP ‘Career Day’, which will be coming later this year. Most of the tracks have already been released as singles, and they seem to be getting TV placements, too. In some ways, Big Fear reminds me of an indie rock version of Ultraista, and that can only be a great thing. ‘Mildew’ is out now.
For more information on Big Fear, bookmark their website. Tour dates will be added there soon, and until then, you can enjoy the bleeding heart artwork.
