Pan-European trio KAU have a knack for delivering rapid-fire percussion, dubby basslines, and letting the smoothest electric piano and keyboard sounds glide effortlessly over the top. Fans of contemporary jazz adjacent bands like GoGo Penguin, Portico Quartet, and Mammal Hands will feel right at home, but KAU is a fiestier, breakbeat spin on the genre. Bold, often funky, and always a bit psychedelic – KAU’s tracks are here to groove.
“dive_deep” is their new single, and it features sharp, precise rhythmic beats, and otherworldly, stretchy and bendy synths. Borrowing from the club scene, the keyboards sound like they are leaping from moon to moon in an echoing abyss. It is so flexible and freeing, I could listen to this track on repeat for ages, for music and movement lessons! The fluidity of the keyboards and bass is oddly satisfying, gimme more of that goodness.
Whilst there hasn’t been an official announcement, it is expected that KAU will be releasing more music later this year. To keep up with KAU and to watch some of their excellent live shows, I’d recommend subscribing to KAU on YouTube. They lean into their electronic side when playing live, making for an exciting jazz-goes-clubbing sound.
