Bird’s Robe Celebrate 15 Years of Australian Prog Rock and Post Rock with Documentary Series

Bird’s Robe founder Mike Solo organised his first gig 17 years ago and established Bird’s Robe as a label 2 years later. Since then, Bird’s Robe has released over 200 albums and organised over 15,000 live shows. It is a tale of finding your niche, being endlessly passionate and supportive, and being a true lover of music and the arts. To celebrate 15 years, a documentary series titled ‘This Is Family’ celebrates the bands they’ve supported, whilst telling the story of Bird’s Robe along the way.

I’ve spent plenty of money on Bird’s Robe albums and artists over the years, and have found the label to be one of the best examples of knowing your purpose and relentlessly pursuing it. It is also a shining example of how to support your artists and bands. All too often, I see labels not focusing on collective community, putting the artist-to-fan connection above all else, and building a sustainable ecosystem for future generations to thrive. Short-termism is a poison in the arts, and Bird’s Robe shows up by doing the hard work to lay community foundations.

If you’ve ever enjoyed prog rock or post-rock – particularly the more experimental and unusual end of those genres – this documentary is for you. There are interviews with sleepmakeswaves, The Crooked Fiddle Band, Captain Kickarse and the Awesomes, Squat Club, Dumbsaint, Space Project, and Solkyri. These are bands that have shaped what the label and collective have become. Then there are contributions from artists who’ve collaborated or shared the same spirit as Bird’s Robe, such as Chelsea Wolfe and We Lost The Sea. Enjoy!
