Introducing… Tape Trash

Tape Trash is a Norwegian emo, alternative rock duo who are gearing up for the release of their new album ‘Eden’. Whilst they love a good power chord, a wall of shoegaze sound, and some fuzz-punk riffs, they aren’t tied to one specific genre, and quite enjoy pairing two sides of rock together to see how they contrast with each other. This usually means songs will have their quieter moments of singer-songwriter reflection, and then explode into something more anthemic elsewhere.

Their new single ‘Rapture Boy’ focuses on the gazing emo rock side of things. Lyrically, it homes in on the album’s theme of what happens after you lose faith. Tape Trash was part of the Christian faith and was so entrenched in that world for years that stepping beyond it into the secular world has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. ‘Eden’ represents the world they’ve left behind and explores the fear, grief, newfound freedom, happiness and confusion they’ve since discovered.

I clicked with ‘Rapture Boy’ immediately. It has powerful hooks and some minor key choices at critical moments that hit hard. It is a real throwback to the early 2000s era of indie-punk, but it feels sincere and not a karaoke attempt. Tape Trash says they “embrace emo as instinct rather than genre”, which I thought was a fascinating insight into how they make music. If you listen back to previous singles, they pick at different parts from the alt-rock commercial heydays of the early 90s to the mid-2000s. Their emo spirit remains, regardless of subgenre, and I think that’s what makes them feel relatable and emotionally investable.

‘Rapture Boy’ is out now. ‘Eden’ will release on 31st October. For more information about Tape Trash, follow them on Instagram.
