Lost: The Musical originally made its way to the stage in 2014, picking various plotlines and characters apart in a way to wink, wink, nudge, nudge to fans of the show. Whilst the singing itself has some off-key moments, the songs are rearrangements of well-known songs from pop and film, such as The Little Mermaid’s “Part of this World” becoming a song about where the Losties have crash landed. The footage recorded is of the very first performance, so you’d imagine that over the musical’s run, it became a slicker performance. The musical takes on key moments across all six seasons.
A lot of thought has been placed into rewording songs to fit the show’s story, turning the show’s characters into caricatures of themselves, and turning Walt into a puppet. Other inspired moments include using ‘Thriller’ as a smoke monster song and using a boxing ring announcer to introduce the tailies. The musical focuses most on the initial two seasons, but most story beats are covered. Meta commentary about the show’s perceived failings, dropped plotlines, wishy-washy rules, and the ending are also repeatedly raised for their comedy value. It’s a bit juvenile at times, but is good-natured overall. Its large cast is clearly passionate and enjoying themselves, so if you like odd musicals and enjoyed Lost at the time (it’s one of my all-time favourite shows), then this is an underrated guilty pleasure. Even some of the original cast went to see it before it closed in 2019.
