Introducing… Cosmic Kitten

San-Pedro quartet Cosmic Kitten formed in 2016 and are celebrating their tenth year making music in style. They create a blend of grungy power chords and messy riffs, mixed in with alt-rock hooks and choruses. Key to their sound is vocalist Karen Marie, who can flick between calm, distant singing and possessed screaming punk rage without warning. I’m reminded a little of Veruca Salt, Hole, and Belly, but Cosmic Kitten is definitely their own band.

Their new self-titled album is being released later this year, and it features a fuller sound than the band’s previous albums. The new album has been in the works for almost a year and has producer Jack Endino on board. Jack produced Nirvana’s ‘Bleach’, and it’s that hissier, bedroom DIY rock sound that encompasses most of Cosmic Kitten’s previous work. The album will cover themes of existential struggle, feeling emotionally empty and drained, and the desire for revenge and relief.

Feeling emotionally empty is the focus of the Cosmic Kitten’s new single, ‘Hole in my Soul’. From the bursts of noise, to the screaming howls, to the dispirited chorus – it’s an anthem of chaos and visceral guitar hooks. Bands that can sync up the guitars, bass, and drums in a way that lets a riff start/stop/start like whiplash make me happy. ‘Hole in my Soul’ does this excellently. That stems from Zach Huckabee’s driving percussion, Jay Vesper’s dynamic bass, and John Chavez’s cutting rhythm guitar.

Enjoy the single, it’s out now. For more information about future releases and tour dates, visit the Cosmic Kitten website. The album is slated for release on 17th October.
