Hailing from the seaside town of Margate in the UK is debdepan. The duo are a genre-bending blend of alternative rock, post punk, dark pop, and electronic beats. I am reminded very loosely of Elastica, but with more Huski and Tom Vek thrown into the washing machine of ideas. Freshly announcing their second EP, ‘Lovers & Others’, is arriving in November, debdepan has a visceral and groove-laden grungy anthem ‘ Habit’, for their lead single.
‘Habit’ is all about circular riffs. From the short-spiral bass riff to the to-and-fro driving guitar overture, everything is designed to madden you. The sludgy yet pacey drums and the gritty guitars signal that all is not well, whilst the catchy, flippant vocals roll off the tongue like modern-day mantras. Vocally, debdepan merges singing with a lyrical spoken word style. It’s how I’d imagine grunge reinventing rap, and whilst it might take a listen or two to click with it, the style works fantastically on this single. It’s slick and effortlessly cool. Debdepan summed it up best as “pretty sad girl but also kind of party” vibes. It’s a perfect soundtrack for a gritty UK drama.
Speaking about the single ‘Habit’, the duo said:
“This song is about feeling like you’re not good enough for someone and having to play it cool to win their affection. We wanted it to feel quite repetitive to signify how my thoughts kept circling. ‘You talk for hours’ is actually about the thoughts in my own brain.”
The duo formed in 2022, releasing their debut EP ‘Omen’ in 2023. You can pick up their previous EP and follow them for more news about ‘Lovers & Others’ on Bandcamp.
