Juana Molina announces new album ‘DOGA’ born out of six years of improvisational refinement

Argentine singer-songwriter and creative Juana Molina has announced her new album ‘DOGA’, the first of new material in six years. Juana says that it’s taken this long because she wanted to let the music rest. The new album started life back in 2019 from a set of live concerts called ‘Improviset’ with keyboardist Odín Schwartz. Molina says that the concerts were meant to be like playing at home, jamming out to your own improvisations, and just enjoying the art of creativity in the moment. The duo performed with analogue synthesisers and sequencers. Every concert and rehearsal was unique, but the music was recorded and from there some of the seeds of ‘DOGA’ were born.

The pandemic slowed things down, and Juana Molina founded her own record label, ‘Sonamos’, and when the world reopened, she went on the road again with ‘Improviset’, which helped to tie down some tracks and take them into the studio. During this time, Juana separated from all her record label distribution contracts and went totally independent. Six years in gestation, ‘DOGA’ is ready for release on 5th November.

The lead single is ‘Siestas ahí’. It is a bouncy, playful, bubbly and globular track. The guitar sways with a buoyancy to it that reminds me of children’s stories, and that sound is emphasised with the layered vocal effects on Juana’s voice. It pitches her voice up like a cute mini version of herself. Add in some unusual earworm chorus melodies and some glitchy synth effects and you have some quintessential experimental folk from one of music’s most original and surprising artists.

‘Siestas ahí’ is out now. It’s perfect for a pillowy nap. The album is available to pre-order on Bandcamp, which will release with a secret bonus 11th track.
