On this Halloween, why not spend time with some traditional folk music, told with a new lick of dark and mysterious paint. That is exactly what Dani Larkin specialises in. For her latest double A-side single, she releases ‘Morning’ and ‘She Moved Through The Fair’. The former is an arrangement of Eleanor Farjeon’s 1931 hymn ‘Morning Has Broken’, and its cloudy mood is thick and foggy. From the pounding pulse of the kickdrum to the twisted strings and raging guitars, it’s as if we are setting off for a daily war. The latter is more meditative. Dani Larkin’s striking voice is twinned and floats mysteriously over light acoustic plucks and field recordings from a visit to Palestine in 2016. The air is dry, but the heart is full. Both tracks are atmospheric and cinematic, and I’m curious to see how expansive Larkin’s sound is on her forthcoming album.
Dani Larkin released her debut album ‘Notes For A Maiden Warrior’ in 2021. After plenty of touring, her follow-up album ‘Next Of Kin’ will release on 30th January 2026. A UK and Ireland tour has been announced at the same time. The album is a sonic and lyrical exploration of birth and death, told through many folk songs and texts. Yes, ‘Danny Boy’ is on the album! There is an in-joke with my folk music friend circle that no artist can escape at least one rendition of ‘Danny Boy’, so welcome to the troupe, Dani.
