Loma Reqs is Kurdish for “Therefore Dance”, and the duo that makes up Loma Reqs take that statement to town. Hêja Netirk met Rico Danta in 2023 and found themselves performing at festivals together. With Hêja’s vocals and Rico’s beats and synths, the pair create a fusion of techno, acid house, and reggaeton, with all kinds of Kurdish instruments past and present mixed in. It sounds both ancient and modern in a fourth-world fusion way.
‘Bûk’ is their latest single and smashes its bass-driven beats out like an action movie. Netirk’s vocals run the gamut from quick speech to hypnotic siren, and an extended saz solo complements the track beautifully. It’s hedonistic whilst acknowledging daily struggles, and whilst the album touches on some deep themes, ‘Bûk’ is far more domestic. The single is a three-course argument between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law about who should do the household chores. The lyrics read like a Latino soap opera where someone breaks a nail and ends up in a coma. Amusing, with a side salad of social commentary.
Ultimately, this track is to dance your arse off to, and Loma Reqs delivers with aplomb. The single comes from Loma Reqs’ debut album ‘Qemirî’, which came out last week. You can buy the album on Bandcamp. For more information about all things Loma Reqs and all things Hêja Netirk, visit Hêja Netirk’s website.
