Benn Jordan creates fascinating sound-related experiments and research studies, and his latest is a warning signal about data centres. He travelled to five sites across America, primarily where data centres exist in different environments, to monitor infrasound and its impacts on the world around it. Infrasound is low-frequency sound that is outside the human audio range, but it can make people feel sick, dizzy, and unstable. Think of it a bit like a subtle hum or vibration that might make your eye twitch without realising it.
Across his study, Benn talks to residents, looks into research papers, and conducts an experiment to see if people feel the impacts of infrasound in as little as three minutes. The results and conclusions are concerning and resemble similar reports from residents who live near data centres. Noise pollution is something we often think about when it comes to cities. City designers implement wall or woodland breaks to funnel traffic noise away from households. Infrasound isn’t as easy to capture, and so these low rumbles will ripple out from the behemoth centres without containment. You could argue that these data centres are becoming sonic weapons, and there’s no legislation or attempt to curb the issue.
Benn Jordan’s research is fascinating, compelling, and well-considered, as he critically reviews his own research at the end. If you like exploring soundwaves and social impacts, and want another reason to detest the absolute insanity of data centre expansion at humanity’s cost, Benn’s video is a fresh take on the topic.
