Thief’s dark electronica returns with lead single ‘Moon and Kill’ from forthcoming 5th studio album

‘Sermons from the Pit’ is the freshly announced album from dark electronica band Thief. Following on from the deeply personal and chaotic 2024 album ‘Bleed, Memory’, which focused on dementia and memory loss at the end of life, Thief casts its eyes to the world at large for this latest collection of songs. Speaking about the album, Thief said in their newsletter:

These 11 tracks wrestle with heartbreak and the freedom of living in a universe that may have no plan at all. 2025 brought a collapse and renewal that forced me to dig deeply into the core beliefs about myself and the world. What begins with anger ends with acceptance and letting go.

I don’t consider this a conceptual album, as it is less about the details and more about what lies beneath them, and each of these sermons are a descent into the different strata of the pit, our storehouse consciousness. It is a fierce album that combines futuristic electronic production with trip hop, jungle and metal, imbedded in soundscapes littered with sacred choral chants.

The lead single, ‘Moon and Kill’, feels familiar. There is a razor-sharp, grizzly riff that bridges electronic noise and guitar work. Drum loops chug away, whilst Dylan Neal’s vocals flick from his huge desperate desolation into fits of rage. The synths slide down notes and pitch-bend like violent stylophone attacks, as the dark trip-hop merges with noise metal to create an oppressive misery. Surprisingly, you’ll also find plenty of vocoder effects and a distorted, gothic organ outro. Rather than dark ambient and gothic synths leading the way, this era has started off sounding more dishevelled and metal-tinged. Thief’s trademark booming reverb and distorted ambience are never too far away. Dylan refers to his process as “cathedral clipping”, as if all the sounds can echo around a cathedral and be processed and shapeshifted with that wide, empty space in mind. Thief has become one of my favourite musical discoveries in the last five years, so I cannot wait for more!

‘Moon and Kill’ is out now. The album is due for release on 27th November and comes in standard and deluxe versions. The deluxe version increases the track list to 20. With cheery titles such as “A Drowning on Christmas Day”, I know I’ll be grabbing the deluxe edition to seep in true doomsday panic. You can preorder the album on Bandcamp.
