Probably even short term readers will know I love a strong female singer-songwriter who is happy to purge everything over dramatic minor chords. The Anchoress is my first new discovery of 2021 although she has been making music for some time. The stage name of Catherine Anne Davies, The Anchoress sits somewhere around a cross over of PJ Harvey, Nadine Shah, My Brightest Diamond and Carina Round. She creates brooding rock anthems with symphonic elements and plenty of alternative vibes from the late 90s thrown in too. I found her through her latest single ‘Unravel’ which perfectly displays this intriguing crossover which I think most of my readers will absolutely fall for – I certainly did.
‘Unravel’ is the second single from the forthcoming album ‘The Art of Losing’. The album is due out on the 5th of March this year. With this and previous single ‘Show Your Face’ already out and showing the albums’ direction, I think The Anchoress is an early contender for one of my favourite albums of 2021 already!
