It’s been a while since I’ve found an experimental rock band who simultaneously delight and terrify me in equal measure. Introducing… SEIMS! This Australian quartet literally throws everything at the powerful snowballing rock that they create. Aside from the usual guitars, bass and drums and piano, there’s strings, harp and a brass section to allow SEIMS to move from chaotic to cinematic. SEIMS love a concept album and ‘Four’, the title of their forthcoming album, was inspired by the Myers Briggs personality tests. On speaking about the album, writer and producer Simeon Bartholomew said ‘This album is all about unintentionally misconstrued conversations – multiple voices/themes saying one thing, and being received or misinterpreted a very different way, for better or worse.’
The lead single ‘Elegance over Confidence’ translates that into musical timings. There are various time signatures being played out at the same time from different instruments to then converge together every now and then. SEIMS say it’s a raspberry blown at the way how math-rock has become all about the show, not about the music. I love it and I’m very intrigued to see how the rest of the album plays out when it releases on 22nd October.
