Tom Rogerson creates beautiful piano-based music with one foot in the classical camp and another in the singer-songwriter world. The result is a sound that would appeal to contemporary classical fans (Olafur Arnolds for example) and singer-songwriters who’d like Myleen Klass to sing desperately sad lyrics over her virtuoso piano music. It feels familiar but quite unique too and given Tom’s recent battles since his 2017 album “Finding Shore”, it feels like he is making a statement that now is the time to be truly him. Tom has lost a parent, had a child and been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer. It is with that backdrop Tom Rogerson found solace in his piano and created his debut solo album “Retreat to Bliss”.
The lead single “Oath” encapsulates both hope and perseverance as the piano unfurls at breakneck speed. The vocals start off as a brooding mumble as they muster courage and strength before reaching a satisfying and dizzying climax. It reminds me of Tori Amos’ latest album “Ocean to Ocean” thematically as if Tom too is pulling himself out of the muck. The single is out now and the visualiser is available below. The album “Retreat to Bliss” is out on the 25th of March.
