Introducing… Quayola / Seta

Algorithms, pianos and digital art projections collide.

I have a fascination with the cross-section where music, technology and art collide and so does Quayola / Seta. Quayola is a media artist and teamed up with Seta who is a musician and technologist to create their duo. This collaboration has resulted in “Transient” which began as an audiovisual concert and now has formed an album too.

Quayola / Seta use algorithms from their tech to control two motorised pianos and video projections. The idea is that the two performers are improvising through technology and binary algorithms to produce art, seeing it mutate between 0 and 1 both through eyes and ears. This allows the piano to do weird and wonderful things a human’s hand span cannot do and lets the artists dive into polyrhythms and patterns and tweak them on the fly.

I find the topic of technology and art quite an emotive one personally so I always enjoy seeing abstract experiments come to life. You can enjoy a performance of “Transient #B_022-03” below. It is taken from the album “Transient” which is released on the 20th of May. You can also catch a live performance on the 16th of June at Sonar by Day.

For more information about Quayola / Seta visit Quayola’s website where he showcases many of his experiments.
