Nicolas Bougaïeff is an electronic artist who is usually associated with the odder side of techno. Often taking a brutalist approach, his latest work sees him using his voice for the first time. Heavily digitalised and vocoded, Nicolas sounds like a warped and jaded robot that you aren’t quite sure is a friend or foe. His forthcoming album “Begin Within” is about him gaining control of himself again, having rebuilt a life in Berlin. Nicolas Bougaïeff says that using his voice was “the sound of me grappling with transformation”.
Alongside discovering his voice, new single “Naked Eye” has mangled beats, twisted synths and a uniquely flexible feeling to the structure of the melody. It is as if all the synths are bending over backwards and warping themselves at will. It’s really fluid and had me really curious, whilst the vocals have a hypnotic malevolence to them. It’s such a strange song but it’s captivating and since it is my first time hearing Nicolas Bougaïeff personally, it left a strong impression.
