Now we all know that we’ve had plenty of fun in MS Paint… but now we can channel our rage at its lack of features into hardcore aggression with MSPAINT. The quartet are a melting pot of post-punk, hardcore rock and a bit of Beastie Boys styled hip-hop beats. The chaos of the booming vocals flip from emo to street but it feels totally in keeping with the raucous rock. Crunchy, low-fi drums mix with well-produced ones. Guitars sound like streamlined bees. Bass guitars sound like zips. MSPAINT wonderfully straddle different ideas and yet it feels so cohesive.
New single ‘ACID’ showcases their new style of writing. The band were inspired partly by video game soundtracks (instant win from this site) and wanted to channel some of those synths and symphonics into their hardcore sound. I think it works a treat. Previously, on their self-titled debut in 2020, there was more of an emphasis on hip-hop beats. This seems to have faded back a little with this new track but I’d expect that element to hold true when their new release comes around.
MSPAINT are currently touring all Autumn long in America supporting Soft Kill, Militarie Gun, The Soft Moon and The Mall. For more information, visit their Bandcamp page. Enjoy ‘ACID’ below, the single is out now.
