Harpist (among other things) and singer-songwriter Mikaela Davis often finds herself placing her harp into various different genres. Moving from a solo artist into a full band effort has seen her move away from the piano pop / alt-pop world into something very different with her latest single. The track ‘Home in the Country’ sees Mikaela turn to a whole country band. It is a playful, uplifting track and well outside of my usual musical trappings, but hearing a harp play toe-to-toe with an electric guitar is a unique twist on the genre.
‘Home in the Country’ is taken from the forthcoming album ‘And Southern Star’ which has been five years in the making. It marks a definite transition in Mikaela’s music because whilst she was definitely alt-folk rock before, now it feels more like a band effort. With the three singles out already, it showcases how diverse the harp playing and setups will be too, including the dreamy electronics of ‘Far From You’. Enjoy a live version of ‘Home in the Country’ below. For more information on the single and the forthcoming album, visit Mikaela Davis on Bandcamp.
