Indie singer-songwriter Mourning Coffee has been releasing tracks that cover the zodiac signs across 2023. Hailing from New Jersey, Christian Diana, the man behind Mourning Coffee creates classic indie music. Plenty of sad chords, falsetto vocals to hammer it home and catchy swaying hooks too. His most recent single ‘Cancer’ is a little more bluegrassy/folksy and is slightly less representative of his usual output. Therefore, I’d like to showcase his previous single ‘Scorpio’ which is a personal favourite of mine.

“Scorpio has always been the more adventurous/daring of the zodiac signs, so in both the new song and music video the theme of exploration persists. The song itself is about meeting someone new and looking for ways to break the ice. Scorpio’s boldness comes out in the line “with fear, I’ll ask you” and the whole chorus itself is littered with reasons to make a move. In the video, there’s a lot of exploration and motion, much like Scorpio’s element water. The water signs are all about movement, so a lot of shots are of me exploring my new hometown (Morristown) as one would explore someone new through conversation. The song is all about finding your inner bravery and strength, which are what Scorpios are all about.”
