Introducing… Catatonic Suns

All your muddy 90s alt-rock rolled into one.

Pennsylvanian trio Catatonic Suns are set to return listeners back to the 90s. The band blends psychedelic undertones with heavy shoegaze and a grungy muddiness to take me back to my favourite era of rock. Think Ride and Slowdrive and you won’t be too far off. Patrick (vocals and guitars) and Jakob (bass) have been friends since birth and grew up obsessing over punk rock bands. Now joined by drummer Caleb, they started releasing music in 2019 as a collection of lo-fi demos. After playing shows for years to gather momentum and recorded their previous albums with additional friends. Now staying stable as a trio, their forthcoming album will be a self-titled one to signal their new foundation.

The lead single ‘Be As One’ embodies everything mentioned above. There is a curious production quirk of the vocals that sound totally separate from the rest of the grungy chaos. They are almost hypnotically subdued and cleanly recorded compared to the muddy rock around them. I really like their vibe and I hear some subtle Nirvana nods too. Enjoy ‘Be As One’ below, the single is out now.

Catatonic Suns’ self-titled album is due out on 6th October. For more information on the band, visit their website.
