The unimitable Kathryn Joseph produced one of the best albums of 2022 with ‘For you who are the wronged’. One of the things that made it stand out was the almost total reliance on just a near-music box-sounding keyboard for music accompaniment. The stark production made every noise vibrate and echo as the succulently sweet keys rang out. Hiding the background of the album was Lomond Campbell who provided subtle modular synths. In an extension of the album, ‘for you who are the wronged (Lomond Campbell remixes)’, a 5 track EP where Lomond comes out of the shadows.
As a fan of Campbell’s solo work, his modular synth style is often dreamy and subtle. This seems to be where Lomond has taken the sounds, adding in beats and understated hues to keep the cinematic gravitas of the original tracks. Add some vocoder effects, heavy bass and plenty of quiet bleepathons and you have something respectful but different. It takes skill and courage to rework such delicate material into something new and keep its emotional core but Kathryn and Lomond have managed it beautifully.
The EP is slated for release on 19th January 204 and the lead track ‘what is keeping you alive makes me want to kill them for (Lomond Campbell Remix)’ is out now. Enjoy it below. Pre-orders are available at Bandcamp.
