Carnival Youth returns with new indie-pop earworm

It has been a while since my favourite Latvian band has graced us with new music but Carnival Youth has returned. ‘Empire of Temptations’ is an English version of their native language ‘LÄ«dz pat bezgalÄ«bai.’ The Latvian version came out two months ago but Carnival Youth have said they struggle to know which language suits which song. The bi-lingual quartet have historically flipped between English and Latvian per record but this time they’ve decided to release the song in both versions.

Ionnalee is doing a similar thing with her forthcoming album – releasing songs in English and Swedish – and it is fascinating listening to songs like that. I can’t help but have a preference for one or the other depending on the vocal rhythm and English isn’t always my preference.

‘Empire of Temptations’ is a laid back snazzy indie pop track that breaks from the drum loops, tin-pot jangly guitars and warm wubbing synths to a dissonant cloud of brass and guitars for the bridge. It is quite an unassuming track at first but it’s now gotten under my skin. Carnival Youth hasn’t announced a new album yet but considering they are now looking at touring outside of Latvia again, I’d expect an EP or LP announcement soon.
