Raoul Vignal’s music often has a hazy, dreamlike quality to it because of how light and airy all the different instrumentation and Roaul’s vocals are. His fingerpicking acoustic guitar arpeggios are like scattering raindrops. His signature guitar is often accompanied by gently brushed drums, light piano keys, flutes and dainty synth work. All three albums explore this softer, softest approach but never at the expense of melody or emotion. Instead, Vignal bathes in introspection and quiet moments of emotion.
His forthcoming album ‘Shadow Bands’ further explores this soundscape. Lead single ‘Icarus’ is a beautifully arranged selection of brushed percussion, softly crooned vocals, delicate guitars and some unusual curious synth motifs. It is the opening track on the album and talks about an alternative take on the tale of Icarus and his destiny. I love how ‘Icarus’ offers a warm milky world in its production but so many of the chords and flourishes have a slightly off-kilter twang to them.
A simple and cute follow-the-hand music video is available below to whet your appetite on all things Raoul Vignal. It is a very representative single for his overarching sound so if you click with this, you’ve got three previous albums of glorious French folk to discover. The single is out now whilst the album ‘Shadow Bands’ is out 8th November. You can pre-order Shadow Bands on Bandcamp where you can also keep up with Raoul Vignal’s latest news.
