‘Here, There‘ was one of my favourite releases from 2022. It announced Melissa Weikart firmly as a talented singer-songwriter who refused to write songs in a straightforward manner. Each track has some kind of dissonance or descent into a form of unnerving chaos and the album became a firm favourite immediately.
Flash forward to today and Melissa Weikart has announced her new EP ‘Easy’. The six track release is due to come out on 17th January 2025 and the title track is the lead single. Using her trademark dissonance and unnerving chords, Weikart is now finding her feet vocally too as her voice flexes and bends with soul and confidence in the chorus refrain. Whilst the previous album was entirely piano and voice, the single shows that Melissa’s sound palette is widening. Synths, bass guitar and vocal layering all appear here and the EP credits include guitars and percussion too. Part of the charm of previous work was having the tempo and emotion wax and wane so I’m curious to see how the new album continues to channel the visceral emotion with more instrumentation.
Enjoy the music video for ‘Easy’ below. The single is out now. The EP of the same name will be releasing on 17th January and you can pre-order it on Bandcamp. For more info about Melissa Weikart, including upcoming tour dates, visit her website.
