Always at the forefront of music technology and creative innovation, Imogen Heap has returned with a new single called ‘What Have You Done To Me’. It is the first of three parts (I assume tracks), with a music video coming at the end. The track is a six-minute assault on the senses. It mixes together groove-driven industrial beats, swamps of vocal layers and a cinematic metallic mechanic synth edge. There is a lot of pitch and time warping across the song, giving it a hunted prey sinister edge. This would suit the soundtrack of a cinematic chase sequence.
Alongside having Imogen Heap back in the world of music again, Imogen’s message about the song hints at wider innovation and design. A website will launch in a few weeks which will contain Mogen. Mogen will talk to you in Imogen’s voice through her AI persona, probably offering reflections on the song itself. I like the clever twist on the fact it will use Imogen’s voice, but the I is removed. It isn’t really her yet if the AI mimics a similar persona, it may allow fans to feel like they’ve talked to her. Imogen Heap also noted you’ll be able to remix and sample the song and interact with it in other ways using other platforms. My mind jumps to stems and samples for her MuiMui Gloves although that’s not a product ready for market… yet. It’s been three years since we’ve had new music and technology has moved at pace during that time. I’m fascinated and excited to see what journey Immi has taken through the tech world.
