Varas is the moniker self-taught producer, singer and songwriter of Benjamin Muñoz Varas. The Swedish artist creates pop-orientated songs that venture off into other genres and then brings elements of them back again. Varas often works in big beats and solid rock guitars after discovering Led Zeppelin as a teenager. He pulls in classic rock vibes, the dirty street grit of a Tom Vek and elements of hip-hop, jazz and soul. His songs sound destined for the dance floor, bringing an alternative edge to a pristine sound.
Now embarking on his third EP, ‘Eaten By Worms,’ Varas is double-downing on that indie/alternative edge to pop. The lead single, ‘Skull,’ has a dynamic rhythm section that allows the rockier bass guitars to shine alongside poppier synth motifs. Varas’ vocals are smooth and calming, gliding over the pensive music. It sounds fresh and new but also reminds me of late 90s UK Britpop with a nod to the indie rock world.
