Introducing… Holly Lovell

“I leave the TV on to feel part of something” is one of the poignant lyrics from ‘Lion’s Den’ by Holly Lovell. The indie folk artist resides in Denver but has roots across the other side of the world in Australia. Her understated, intimate, and reflective take on music means every listener feels like they are being let in on a secret. Holly’s songs come from pained places too. For her upcoming album ‘Hello Chelsea’, Lovell covers addiction, grief, family history and some healing too. Holly says she wanted to paint a full picture of someone finding their way again in life and this album will tell that story.

Single ‘Lion’s Den’ is beautifully undersold. The soft skipping percussion, wandering lap guitar and lilting vocal expressions convey a sense of weary acceptance. When someone feels all alone, a solemn lap guitar left to fill the space between lyrical wounds does a lot to sell the atmosphere. The single is comfortably numb and the simple music video has Holly Lovell in a knackered shop window doorway singing out to the world passing by with no one taking notice. The track has a charming way of making you – and Holly – feel like an outsider, wanting to break into the world.

‘Lion’s Den’ is the second of three current singles from the forthcoming album. ‘When Did I Lose You‘ was released yesterday and has a fuller, crunchier indie-folk pop bounce. Laura Veirs and later Beth Orton fans will be right at home here with its cinematic and rousing finale. Enjoy the music video for ‘Lion’s Den’ below. The single is out now. The full album ‘Hello Chelsea’ is scheduled for release on 7th February 2025. To find out more about Holly Lovell, visit her website.
